John Zorn - Kristallnacht (USA 1992)

The John Zorn Discography.

Zorn's deepest and most serious album is his musical representation of the event named in the albums title. A disgusting and despicable event that was a forerunner of something even more horrific. Understandably the music here isn't easy listening even by Zorn's standards(referring mostly to track 2) and it is a difficult record to just sit and "enjoy" due to the images it provokes and the events it represents.  The first track perhaps set the tone for Zorn's later Masada project, before it gets almost taken over by what could be German propaganda speech recordings, But is is the second track that really represents the event with its crescendo of broken glass sounds and other less audible noise which makes for an almost unlistenable piece, although it does get a bit more bearable later on in the piece. The album is highly regarded within the Zorn Discography and after skipping "Never Again" and sitting with the music for several listens the rest of the set does impress and isn't as gloomy as the title suggests. Fairly chaotic and verging on industrial, like on "Barzel" which sounds like a cross between Mezbow and Throbbing Gristle but mostly the set has a classical feel. There are even some light heart moments if you listen carefully. A real eclectic set and most impressive. Rating 4.5/5.

John Zorn - The Noble Prize Winner - Filmworks XXIV (USA 2010)

The John Zorn Discography.

Although scored for a film, this laid back set is pretty much a straight up Jazz release with piano, vibes and drums. Although the themes seem to be repeating a bit throughout the record and it all sounds a bit the same, the music itself is very enjoyable and very John Zorn. I am thoroughly enjoying this set  and a great one to put on when entertaining as there isn't any thing here to frighten the guests. Another great release in the huge Zorn discography and rated 4/5.

The Cracow Klezmer Band - Sanatorium Under The Sign Of The Hourglass (Tzadik 2005)

More From Tzadik.
The John Zorn Discography.

This one should belong in the John Zorn Discography as he composed all the songs here. Not sure if these are Masada related compositions but this set would sit particularly well in the Book of Angles series.
These guys really let rip on many of these tracks with some of this being a really bouncy set of uptempo Klezmer numbers played extraordinarily well and the rest being more slower atmospheric numbers. Overall a pretty good set although I am enjoying the faster songs much more as the album feels like its' petering out as it slows down. Again, recommended for fans of Zorn's Masada music. Rating 3/5.

The lounge lizards - Queen Of All Ears (USA 1998)

Something not from Tzadik.

Since hearing am impressive track from this album via another blog some months back, I have acquired several of this legendary New York downtown groups recordings. This was their last album with their debut coming out in 1981. This is not Jazz but it has jazz sensibilities, not pop but some catchy melodies, not avant-garde but some cool experimentalism. Pretty hard to pigeonhole this music but it is very impressive and has a fairly laid back ambience. A great addition to my collection and very worthwhile checking out if you like some quirky quality off beat music.Rating 4/5.

The Beauty Room - The Beauty Room II (USA 2013)

A recent arrival.

The second album from the most pleasant and inoffensive sons of Steely Dan. This MOR isn't something I would usually be attracted to but I do like Steely Dan and these guys do a fantastic impersonation but are genuine enough to be their own band. It really doesn't matter what genre, if a band is this good I will be into it. Not quite as catchy as Coldplay and slightly less jazzy than Steely Dan but just a genuinely nice album. Play at dinner parties or when your Grandma visits and you can listen to some quality music without offending anyone. Rating 3.5/5.

Dora Juarez - Cantos Para Una Dispora (Tzadik 2013)

The Tzadik Catalogue.

Back to the Tzadik catalogue and this release in the in the Radical Jewish Culture series kicks off with a very impressive display of wordless acapella vocal pyrotechnics from this young lady before segueing into a lovely ethnic sounding folk song. The ethnic feeling to the music stays throughout the set but the music goes to many other strange and unusual places and is very inventive and quirky. Dora has a fabulous voice and uses to to wonderful effect. A wonderful and quite beautiful recording. Rating 3.5/5.

Queens Of The Stone Age - ..Like Clockwork (USA 2013)

Another new release.

Wasn't sure if I was gonna pick this one up at first. It had been 5 years since the last QOTSA and their last album, while Ok, didn't set the world alight, but I have immensely enjoyed several of their previous releases. This set won't upset their regular fan base, although is has a mellower vibe than their earlier music. It is still classic Queens... and an enjoyable and worthwhile addition to their catalogue of desert rock. I am growing to like this album quite a lot and QOTSA are still one of the premier contemporary Rock bands. Rating 4/5.

Arbouretum - Coming Out of the Fog (USA 2013)

Something different for a change.

Here is another of those bands that exist for some time and release several albums before I get to hear about them. This album is their 7th since 2006 so they obviously have had some small amount of success to keep them productive and producing albums. This release is another that was brought to my attention via Uncut Magazine and their slow burning Americana inflected indie pop has been an enjoyable listen over the last few weeks since it arrived. A strong set of well crafted songs of mostly slow tempo but full of nice melodies. Nothing groundbreaking or all that original but just a strong album of its genre. Rating 4/5.

Cold Specks - I Predict A Graceful Expulsion

Another recent release.

I was working out at the gym the other day and I have to suffer the unending stream of indie pop/rock, R'n B and Rap that plays on the TV via the local music channel. I was thinking how so bloody boring and predictable is so much of the commercial tripe they play on these things. There are so many of these artists and they all start to sound the same. I think it takes something special to stand out from the crowd and it may not have to be totally original but occasionally someone pops up from the murky depths and impresses me immensely. Cold Specks was brought to my attention via an Uncut Magazine CD earlier this year and I finally got my hands on a copy of this debut last week. This woman has a great voice and has matched her soulful croon to some lovely laid back but richly textured folksy pop songs and has captured my interest and given me some wonderful music to enjoy. Rating 4/5.

Pet Bottle Ningen - Non-Recyclable (Tzadik 2013)

The Tzadik Catalogue.

I've been thinking a lot about this record as I sit here trying to absorb it and maybe enjoy it. I'm struggling a bit with the second option and so thinking why this is. Lets start with the type of music here, this is a slightly different combination of Guitar, Sax and Drums and the music is a sort of Avant Rock cum Jazz. Quite messy and chaotic with little in the way of catchy melody or conventional song structure. A sort of free rock. These guys are from the New York Downtown scene and I guess from what I have heard from that scene, which has been going for something like 40 odd years now, this is kinda run of the mill stuff. I believe the one quite important aspect of the NY Downtown scene is improvisation and people like John Zorn have been doing stuff like this for almost as long as the scene has been around. This music sounds quite familiar to me now and reminds me of stuff I explored 20 years ago(Some Zooge Rift comes to mind and others I can't quite pinpoint right now and of course Zorn himself) and also is along similar lines to our mate at nuvoid Blog, Richard Coleman, and his early 90s band UYA. Then there is the Sun Ra aspect to this music and some of the more chaotic stuff reminds me of his music although the young lady on Sax, while blowing some wild stuff and sounds a little like Zorn in places, really is no John Gilmore or Zorn. So while I don't object to this type of music(I mean I now own vast catalogues of Sun Ra and John Zorn), I am finding this release mostly uninspiring and mostly unoriginal. There are some interesting moments in the set where they do something slightly different and pull it off but overall this just sounds like another wall of noise that has all been done before much better by others. These guys have talent and are capable and no doubt love the music and the Downtown scene, so now they just have to make their own unique statement within that arena and there are hints of that here but for now I can only rate this 2/5.

Uri Gurvich - BabEl (Tzadik 2013)

The Tzadik Catalogue.

A very impressive modern jazz record with plenty of wonderful alto sax from Uri and again that slight tinge of world music thrown into the mix in places. All very melodic and accessible without much avant-jazz to put those of a gentile nature off. Another worthwhile Tzadik release and I am enjoying it enough to give it 4/5 as I close my eyes and let the music wash over me.

Gloria Coates - At Midnight (Tzadik 2013)

More from Tzadik.

Another recent arrival in the Tzadik Composer series. Gloria Coates has been composing for over 50 years and has written 17 symphonies and yet is not mentioned in my "Penguin guide to Recorded Classical Music,2008". None of the composers I have so far explored on Tzadik appear in that tome, but reading her bio and listening to this music, it appears she is quite a major player in contemporary Classical music. This set of compositions covers quite a time line, from 1962 to 2008 and I am quite stunned by the awesome quality of this music. It is quite powerful, impressive and very expressive and I have connected with it in a big way, which is something I don't usually do with this sort of music.
Not exactly flowing with Melody but not all chaotic dissonance either, not as avant-garde as a couple of the other composers I have heard so far in this series. Highly recommended and get my rating of 5/5.

Sun Ra - Concert For the Comet Kohoutek (USA 1973/1993)

The Sun Ra Discography.

Yep! More Sun Ra, quite a bunch have arrived over the last few weeks and I am still wading my way through them in random order now. This is another live recording from a period abound with live Ra recordings. I haven't much to say about this set, it is pretty standard fare for the period and the recording is of a reasonable quality and like so much of Sun Ra's output, focus and dedication is required to really get the most from his music. The electronic freeform sounds on "Journey through the outer Darkness" are very impressive and for me the highlight of this set and are one of the things that set Ra apart in the Jazz world. Still, another worthwhile addition to my collection and I will rate it 3/5.

John Zorn - Filmworks 1986-1990 (USA 1992)

The John Zorn Discography.

I have read many times about to where to start for a new listener of the John Zorn catalogue. Of course it would depend on your musical palette. Most would be very put off if they plunged into the early game pieces but there are many much more accessible places to start, but to get a real overview of the vast array of musical styles that John inhabits then perhaps this set could be a very good place to start. The earliest of John's quite substantial FilmWorks Series this set consists of 32 short tracks scored for several obscure movies over the time period mentioned. This is an awesome set with so many bases covered that I won't bother mentioning them all but as I said this lot covers a vast amount of ground and never lets up for interesting ditties and great tunes. There is plenty o catchy melodies here and some slight weirdness but overall very accessible and highly recommended and gets 4.5/5.

John Zorn - Elegy (USA 1991)

The John Zorn Discography.

This recent CD arrival is another one of Zorn's "File Card" Pieces, which means it consists of some  pretty avant-garde sounding collages with plenty of unusual sound effects. I like the atmospherics of this set and the feel of the music here has a classical feel in places and so could be considered one of his composer series recordings. I think this is the best of his file card recordings that I have heard so far and I rate is 4/5.

Sun Ra - The Other Side Of The Sun (USA 1980)

The Sun Ra Discography.

Another recent arrival to add to my burgeoning Sun Ra Collection and we find Ra and the boys in a very melodic mood as they swing their way through an impressive "Space Fling" taking us all the way back to the Arkestra's early days. Then we get a lovely version of  "Flamingo" before we get treated to a very funky version of the perennial "Space is the Place" and a unique version it is too. "The Sunny Side Of The Street" is another extended swing workout, with the album closing with another Ra Original in the slightly more chaotic style we are use to. Overall a fairly accessible set from Ra and most enjoyable. Rating 3.5/5.

Sun Ra - Other Planes Of There (USA 1966)

The Sun Ra Discography.

More out there music for this next Sun Ra recording and again I refer you to Nuvoid and Adventure Equation for more detailed analysis and information about this album. I'll Just say that it sounds like standard Sun Ra music, which means pretty much unlike anyone else, quite challenging and free sounding jazz music. Some more great piano from the master, Pretty wild and chaotic sounds here.
Rating 3.5/5.

Sun Ra - When Angels Speak Of Love (USA 1966)

The Sun Ra Discography.

First up, because I'm lazy and mostly semi-literate, I'll direct you to a couple of better sources for more informed opinions of this next Sun Ra recording. Nuvoid and Adventure Equation
I think this is the high point of the group of the choreograph workshop recordings from the early  60s in New York. Space music certainly would be an apt description for this strange atmospheric Jazz inflected music. It's is mostly slow in tempo with plenty of that famous reverb and echo from these Workshop recordings. I am very impressed  with the opening track and have enjoyed the whole album overall, especially as there is some great Ra piano in the mix here and there. It is great that these ultra rare recordings are actually still available from the Evidence reissue campaign back between 1992 and 2000, I have relied on them heavily in building by collection.Rating 5/5.

Sun Ra - What's New (USA 1975)

The Sun Ra Discography.

1.  What's New   6:55
2.  Wanderlust   5:53
3.  Jukin'   2:26
4.  Autumn in New York   6:59

5.  State Street   3:45
6.  Sometimes I'm Happy   6:42
7.  Time after Time 1   2:18
8.  Time after Time 2   3:30
9.  Easy to Love   3:27
10. Sunnyside Up   3:36

11. We Roam The Cosmos   10:30

Got a bit of a backlog of Sun Ra albums to get through and I believe this is where we got to in part one of the Sun Ra Discography. This is the second release in the discography where I haven't been able to purchase it on CD("Deep Purple" was the other one although some of the tracks I have on "Sound Of Joy"), except some of the tracks above appeared on the "Standards" CD. This original release has a particularly convoluted history and has never been reissued on CD, so I got this version from Adventure Equation Blog. Also check out Nuvoid, for  a more indepth review and history.
The first four tracks, again recorded at the Choreographers workshop in 1963, continue the series of jazz standards the Arkestra covered and overall is an enjoyable workout, although I do prefer it when they play the more original Sun Ra compositions. Tracks 5  to 10 cover similar ground and some I have covered on the "Standards" CD. All fairly conventional Jazz but more in the Bebop style than the earlier swing that Ra played previously. A nice set.
Track 11 was the original B-side of What's New but was only issued on very few copies of the original pressing before the other tracks, 5-10, replaced it on later pressings. This is a fairly lo-fi live recording of an apparently improvised number which sounds familiar with parts of other tracks incorporated. The line "space is the place" and perhaps, the line"My Brother The Wind" indicate this. It is mostly a spoken/sung word piece with very slight background sounds. Ra Sermonising his space stuff. Not particularly interesting.
Overall rating 2.5/5.
