Rolling Stone Magazine 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2003)

Here is an exercise in futility. The following is a list of the Top 500 Albums of all time(as of 2003, when it was first published, and I still have a copy of the issue in question) as voted by over 250 musiic critics and journos as well as musicians and other luminaries. I have indicated all of the ones I have from this list and given the total out of 500 that I own at the end just to show off my exellent taste in music. Why? cos I can. The ones in Red I own.

Still stuck in the 60s with this totally awesome UK 60s white boy blues band. I love the blues and admire immensely the late 60s blues boom with excellent Blues bands such as Shaky Vic, the immortal John Mayall and the best of the bunch, the original Fleetwood Mack, to mention my favorites. I have no idea how a record of this magnitude slipped under my radar, but I was totally unaware of the existence of Love Sculpture untill My best recommender of all things obscure, Chuntao, suggested I check this out, cos she thought I mike Like it. Well She was far from wrong, An album hasn't blown my mind as much as this in a long time and after heading over to Amazon and buying it quick smart, it has now firmly rooted its self in my unwritten top album list.Mostly covers of blues standards, this record is mainly a vehicle for Dave Edmond's astonishing guitar playing. From the exhausting opener "Stumble" through fast and slow blues till we get to an extremely excellent version of the unbelievably brilliant Koko Taylor version Of Willie Dixon's "Wang Dang Doodle". The album closes with the only original , the very good slower blues instrumental "Blues Helping". My Ranting 5+/5.

Here is another excellent forgotten band brought to my attention by my blogging buddy Chuntao, when she posted this over at Rare MP3 back in 08. This late 60s psychedelic pop band contained two blokes who later went on to much greater and more serious things in a combo called Deep Purple, namely Rodger Glover and Ian Gillam.During the 3 years specified above these guys released a slew of singles in the Uk all of which and more are included here in this two disc set. There are some real gems in this set of classic 60s pop,rock, psych as well as a couple of sloppy pop tracks my mother would like. This album has kept me amused for most of the day with the many interesting cover versions they recorded and also plenty of very good originals. "Love, Hate, Revenge" was already familiar to me from the "Nuggets" compilations but the rest was refreshing new to my ears and considering this compilation mines everything they did, it never really slips in quality, except for a couple of those sloppy pop tracks I mentioned. A very worthwhile collection and I highly recommend to any 60s music heads. My Rating 4/5

And now for something completely different. I found a track I had recently downloaded from WFMU's Blog

from their "Give The Drummer Some" weekly blog music round up and that particular song caught my attention on my Ipod the other day and so I had to investigate further. This very obscure album from Brazil was the result of that investigation and I checked it out today to find something of the like which I hadn't heard before. Strange sort of warped African rhythms with Latin sounding brass arrangements with vocal accompaniment that is surprisingly very cool to listen to. Very unique music and defiantly worth checking out for something different. The track that caught My attention was the excellent "India" and the rest of the album is not bad either. Can't really describe this music very well, so listen for yourself Here.

This ultra rare rocker from the US is another great find by my friend Chuntao, over at Rare MP3.

Their debut album is a mix of great 70s blues tinged hard rock with soaring psyched out guitars like "Black Widow" and more laid back pop orientated numbers such as the soulful "Like Fire"."Snake Doctor" is a bit of slowed down swamp boogie and the tribal "Hoodoo Beat" is my most liked track. This album has that real early 70s feel to it that I am drawn to and overall is a strong first effort, which pretty much slipped under the radar at the time.This album id defiantly worth repeated listening and I rate it 3.5/5.

I'm sure many of you well remember "The Futures So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" and "Life is Hard" back in the late 80s by this neat male/female duo. Both those songs from their first album were played on the radio here and I had the album on vinyl back then, This is their second album of well crafted Beatlesque pop songs. Nice, well written quirky pop infused with Americana, with little stories and social commentary. Has a slight melancholy feel to it, dealing with people just the other side of the tracks."Easy" is a classic and the title track also a highlight. With no real weak tracks on this wonderful laidback effort, these guys proved they were much more than a two hit wounder. A very enjoyable album and my rating 4/5.

Bit of a mixed bag, this one, late 60 pop with a tinge of psychedelia and a touch of jazz among other things. Some good tracks, with "Jacqueline" being a highlight with its cool base lines and nifty guitar riff, " The Walrus and the Horse" is a nice organ driven, jazz tinged instrumental, a sort of lightweight Deep Purple. "Glory" is quite an uplifting anthem. The title track and "Mandy" I can defiantly live without and the cover of one of the Beatles weaker tracks is played pretty straight, which begs the question why bother.The rest is defiantly interesting and again more rewarding on closer listening. This is another album that, although it has some interesting moments, failed to really fire my enthusiasm. My overall rating 2.5/5.

PS This is the English late 60s POP Spectrum, not the Aussie early 70s Spectrum.

Much hyped out there in blog world, this first rock album to come out of Turkey is psychedelic rock heavily laced with the local flavour of music and unfortunately to these ears is pretty disappointing. There are some interesting sounds initially but it gets a bit repetitive and I really don't find it at all inspiring. In the context of the time when it was released it is a good record, competent writing and playing and it is still listenable, but the best I can give it is 2/5.

Yeeehaaar, Ya'll get on down at the hoedown,ya hear, to this hillbilly, Bluegrass, banjo and fiddle music for the 21st century. With bits of Dylan, Neil Young, songs about God, Drugs, loose Women, up tempo dance numbers mixed with slower country songs, a great mix of tracks to keep you amused. Sometimes these guys are pretty serious but mostly not very serious at all. An enjoyable listen which grew more pleasurable as the songs became more familiar, especially "Bobcat Tracks" with its Led Zep intro and Dylan style singing and "Don't Ride That Horse Home" recalls Neil Young. "James River Blues" is classic Americana and sounds familiar even though it is an OCMS original. Another grower, My rating 3.5/5.

Rant, Rant, Rave, Rave...F**ken awesome... Rant, Rave... Best punk album ever...Rant, Rave... Passion... Powerful...Rant, Rave... most brilliant guitar...Blah, Blah, Blah.... Rant, Rave... Desert island disc... Blah, Blah, Rant, Rave.

The greatest album never officially released, this has been near the top of my all time list since high school.

Any one familiar with Joy Division will know these songs but may not have heard them like this in their original form. Raw, rocking loud, snotty, brilliant. I posted this over at Rare MP3 some time back and here is what I wrote about it then.

"We all know of the Great English band "Joy Division", but what some don't know is that they originally called themselves "Warsaw", and they recorded a bunch of tracks for RCA Records, which were intended for an album, but the band didn't like the synths that the producers added to the tracks and so they quit RCA and the album was never released. These recordings eventually turned up in slightly different forms on Joy Division's early releases and eventually they appeared in their original form on a bootleg titled "Warsaw By Warsaw". Now, a friend of mine at high school was a Joy division fanatic and had several hard to get bootlegs of them and he made me a tape of this particular one. This tape lived in my car almost permanently and I use to blast it all the time when I was on long trips around our beautiful Island. It became one of my all time favourites and the passion and the beautiful reverberation of the guitar sound is truly awesome. Although it is low-fi it is very clear, the lyrics are easy to understand and the guitar just is amazing, the way it ends on "Interzone", the awesome riff of "Failures" and the incredible "No Love Lost". Every song is just stunning, the rawness and passion dominate these tracks, the greatest punk album never made. Eventually the tape expired and as I had lost contact with its source, my life was destined to be "Warsaw free," until several years ago, when I actually found it on CD, released in 1994 on Movie Play, I was over the moon, ecstatic, I thought I would never hear this stuff again. So it was with great excitement that I gently placed the shiny new disc into my stereo and prepared to be transported into bliss. But AAARGH, what the hell is this, the fools had ruined it, the complete d**k who remastered it had almost completely rendered it unlistenable, the base and drums had been turned up and distorted and almost drowned out the most incendiary guitaring ever. I was devastated, the CD got put in its rightful place on my shelf and was destined to be played only very occasionally. I did have many of the tracks on other Joy Division albums and Compilations, but these versions, although very good, left me somewhat disappointed, empty. Recently, something made me drag out the CD for another listen and I then decided to see if I could again track down the original unmolested recordings. As far as My ears remember, I seem to have been successful, I did find the 1994 Movie play version on a couple of Blogs, but after digging deeper into other sources I am delighted to say that the state of bliss has been restored to my ears."

The Last few daily albums have been randomly selected from my itunes library for my listening pleasure, but this time I made a conscious choice after a song off this album caught my ear the other day. This music recently came into my possession through my exploration of the top 100 Japanese albums from Rolling Stone(Japan) as well as Julian Copes top 50 Jap Rock albums.

The Particular track that caught my attention was the lovely atmospheric "River Of Soul", a slow burning flute and synth driven Floydian exercise of progressive rock, and Pink is the order of the day for this album and these guys drink heartily from the fountain of Floyd, especially "The Cave" with it's unmistakable lifting of a snippet from the "Dark Side Of The Moon" Album.. Although pretty derivative, this album is still very enjoyable with some very good guitar solos to be found within some of the extended space jams.

I am reviewing, here a CD Reissue from 1992 of two of Sun Ra's Original Albums released during the 1960s, from his huge and chaotic discography but were recorded at earlier times. The two original realeases, as far as I can tell were:

As you can see the Cd reissue has two extra tracks that I can't find listed on the original albums but one could assume they actually did come from "Visits Planet Earth" as the listed tracks make for a very short album.
After another search on the web, I can confirm the the two tracks indeed do belong on the "Visits Planet Earth" LP, according to both Wiki' and Allmusic. Anyway on to the quick review.

A description: Bigband swing, infused with be-bop and the occasional bit of avaunt-guard as well as an infusion of Egyptian sounding melodies. Plenty of Space references just to make it that bit more unconventional. I have been really enjoying these early Sun Ra recordings today, plenty happening to keep me amused on closer listening. This early music is much more accessible than a lot of his later stuff and the bands are tight and playing well, enjoyable solos and both albums go well together on the Cd reissue. Not my most favorite of the late 50s stuff but this is growing on me with closer inspection. My rating overall for both albums 3.5/5.

Jim Morrison, the Voice, The Poet, The Sex Symbol, The Snake King, The Boozer, The Waster, The Legend! "Roadhouse Blues" has rocked many many a party for 40 years, especially plenty of mine, "Peace Frog", My all time Favorite Doors song. "You Make Me Real" awesome!!, and the rest just totally excellent, not weak tracks at all, fast songs and slow burners, 60s psychedelic blues influenced organ driven rock. The Doors are easily in the top 5 greatest bands ever and "Morrison Hotel" , their second to last LP while Jim was still alive is their best and one of my all time favorites. Too hard to really describe this brilliant music and why bother, we all know it. My rating 5/5

Brought this Chicago blues monster on one of my amazon shopping sprees a couple of years ago, along with several other blues Cds I had been looking for. Released on the mighty Alligator records in 1989, but recorded in 1973, this album by Blues Harp legend Horton and his apprentice Bell is one of the most powerful blues albums I have heard. The power and feeling of this album hits you right from the start and doesn't let up. With most tracks original compositions and a brilliant take on "Trouble In Mind", it's a wonder Walter didn't record more. Classic Chicago blues at its' best and properly one of the last of its' kind being so rooted in that 50s style. My Rating 4.5/5

A quick review of this album that I have been listening to today on my Ipod and which I found on the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog. There is not very much info on the web about Sagbohan Danialou except that he comes from Benin and is or was pretty big there. He has been in several African groups, Black Santiago being one that I have heard. This is a pleasant enough compilation of African pop with the usual African sounding rhythms and some more traditional sounding vocal harmonic sections to his songs. I enjoyed it playing during the day as I was working but it didn't really draw me in, but this music becomes more rewarding with more concentrated listening, picking up the more subtle shifts in his songs and the different styles he has explored over his fairly long career. My rating 3.5/5

Cass/Lagoon Saddle 1-2 May 2010

Well, I just got back from another excellent weekend tramp in the mountains with a couple of good friends, and stunning weather. The Cass/Lagoon Saddles loop is another tramp written up in Nick Groves "South Island Weekend Tramps" and again it didn't disappoint.

Clair had asked me many,many moons ago about coming out tramping and it just didn't happen for one reason or another, and it had come up again recently at another function. I thought this trip would be perfect as she hadn't been out for a long time and I hadn't yet done this Canterbury Classic Myself. Ulrich, from my last tramp was also in and a couple of others passed.

We met at Springfield on a stunning Saturday morning and as we transferred the gear into my car it was spotted that Clair had forgotten to re-install the laces into her boots, and had in fact left them at home. This presented us with a minor logistical problem until I remembered I always kept a spare pair in my pack., Problem solved and armed with a nice bit of info to give her a ribbing about over the weekend, we set off for our destination. Leaving the car at the Cass car park, we set off up the Cass river on our 16Km journey over Cass Saddle and down to Hamilton Hut. A pleasant walk and wonderful conversations were had as we trekked out way up the river bed, through beech forest, over the saddle at 1325M and down Hamilton Creek, through more lovely Beech forest. Passed some pretty impressive examples of natural erosion and Ulrich the fungi fiend had a field day spotting the many types of mushroom along the track. Also, we were surprised to be greeted by several cattle beasts along the grassy flat before Hamilton hut(we assume they must have come up the Harper River). They soon fled from us when I mentioned how good one of them would be for dinner.

We found a group of 5 + 1 already at the hut and three more arrived soon after us and so a cosy night was had in this excellent hut, with the fire going and good food and conversation.

We were the last to leave the hut the next morning, to a brilliantly clear but frosty day and off we went on another 16km day of tramping. After calling Clair back from starting to head off to lake Colridge, down the Harper river, we crossed the river using the walk wire, cos our sox were still dry and found a short track that climbed up to a place called Mirror Tarn. This was a worthwhile side trip(see Picture below) and out timing was perfect. the second days trek up the Harper to Lagoon Saddle was a bit more picturesque than the previous day, with moss covered trees and wonderful side streams and the early morning sun streaming through the trees. We stopped at the old West Harper Hut for Smoko, avoided taking the wrong turn up Long Creek before climbing up through the bush to lunch at the Lagoon Saddle Shelter. After a leisurely lunch we headed off past Lagoon and slopped out way round the front of Mt Bruce, getting very dirty boots, after the heavy rain they had ,earlier in the week. Then dropped down through some pine forest and Mushroom city, much to Ulrich's delite, and then back into beech forest before coming out at the Bealy car park, where Clair and I had a lovely chat sitting in the sun, while Ulrich, whom we had volunteered, hitchhiked back to my car and brought it back to us with a flat tyre.

Another brilliant and most enjoyable weekend had with excellent people and amazing scenery. Ya gotta love it.
